India Breaking News reported Badminton World Federation Opens Doors to Belarus and Russia, that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) is considering lifting the ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus, allowing them to compete in BWF-sanctioned competitions as neutral individuals. The decision was discussed at a recent council meeting, with the BWF emphasizing its commitment to ensuring athletes can participate without being affected by geopolitical conflicts.

While reaffirming its condemnation of the Ukrainian invasion, the BWF supports the International Olympic Committee’s stance that athletes should not suffer consequences due to world affairs. As such, a regulatory framework is being developed to enable Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete neutrally, aligning with IOC recommendations.

The proposed framework aims to meet the participation requirements set by the IOC and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all competitors. The BWF Council will review the framework’s principles, structure, and timeline at its next meeting in August, coinciding with the 2023 TotalEnergies Badminton World Championships in Copenhagen.

Belarus and Russia be allowed Playing

The initiative to lift the ban has received support from figures like Hong Kong coach Ho Yi-ming, who believes it will benefit affected players. The ban was initially imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last March, but the BWF now seeks to provide a pathway for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete neutrally in international tournaments.

Despite the potential lifting of the ban, the BWF acknowledges that major organizations like World Athletics continue to prohibit Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competition. However, the BWF remains committed to its guiding principle of promoting unity and inclusivity in sport, irrespective of geopolitical circumstances beyond its control.
