Hong Kong’s participation in the ACC Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup this month features a complete squad, including six returning players and Cottam as the newly appointed head coach. Cottam, a former first-class player and senior sportsman manager at Bangladesh’s National Sports Academy, assumes his coaching role with enthusiasm.

In the Women’s Asian Cup, Hong Kong will compete in a group alongside India, Pakistan, and Thailand, while another group includes Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia. Cottam’s arrival coincides with the permanent appointment of Simon Willis as the men’s head coach and other strategic changes within the Hong Kong Cricket Association.

Mark Farmer, formerly serving as senior players manager, transitions to the role of youth pathways coach, aiming to bridge the gap between club and elite-level cricket. Additionally, Chris Pickett is reinstated as Head of Performance Analysis to ensure comprehensive analysis across all Hong Kong representative teams.

As preparations intensify for upcoming events like the Asian Games, World Cup qualifiers, and Asian Cup qualifiers, the Hong Kong Cricket Association emphasizes the significance of bolstering coaching resources during this busy period. The association is delighted to host the Women’s T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup next month, organized by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Scheduled from June 10 to 21, the tournament will feature ‘A’ teams from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates. The competition will witness teams divided into two groups, with the top two from each advancing to the semi-finals on June 19, followed by the finals two days later.

Jay Shah, President of the ACC, reaffirms the organization’s commitment to fostering women’s cricket development and providing equal opportunities within the Asian cricketing landscape. Hong Kong’s CEO Burgi Shof highlights the significance of hosting such events in promoting women’s cricket across Asia and underlines the support received from the Arts and Sports Development Fund and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised by associate member states regarding the revenue distribution model proposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which they fear could undermine the development of smaller cricketing nations. The proposed model, allocating a significant portion to major cricketing nations, could impact funding for infrastructure, programs, and outreach efforts in associate member countries.

Sumod Damodar from the ICC Chief Executive Committee stresses the inadequacy of the proposed model in meeting the needs of associate member countries, citing the essential role of funding in sustaining cricketing programs and bridging developmental gaps. Tim Cutler, former CEO of the Hong Kong Cricket Association and current CEO of the Vanuatu Cricket Association, expresses concern over widening inequalities and calls for more equitable distribution of funds to promote global cricket development.

Despite these challenges, Hong Kong’s cricketing landscape continues to evolve, with recent victories showcasing the team’s prowess on the international stage.
