India Breaking News reported Mo Weijie becomes boss Horse Circuit, Mo Weijie has finally become his own boss in the horse racing world. Mo, who previously served as an assistant to Tony Cruz for nine years, has now been granted a trainer’s license by the Hong Kong Jockey Club for the 2023-2024 season.

This advancement marks a significant transition for Mo from an assistant to a trainer in his own right, setting him up to compete against some of the seasoned veterans in the field. Recently, the Hong Kong Jockey Club also welcomed Australian trainer Mark Newnham into the fold as another new trainer for the upcoming season.

Before securing this role, Mo undertook an extensive apprenticeship. He started his career in the industry as a jockey back in 1993 and was qualified by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Licensing Board as an assistant trainer in 2008. He spent four years working under various acclaimed trainers including winners of the Melbourne Cup, before becoming the chief assistant to Tony Cruz in the 2014-15 season. During his tenure with Cruz, Mo played a crucial role in securing eight individual Group 1 wins and two Classic wins.

Expressing his gratitude, Mo said, “I sincerely thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the Licensing Board for granting me a trainer’s license for the 2023-2024 season. Having started my journey in 1993, I’m excited about this new chapter as a trainer. I’ve learned a great deal from several great trainers and aspire to emulate their success.”

Andrew Harding, the Jockey Club’s executive director, mentioned that they have been observing Mo’s progress for some time. He emphasized the importance of nurturing talent to sustain the growth of Hong Kong racing. The Licensing Committee believes that Mo has earned this opportunity through his dedication and extensive learning from some of the best trainers.

With expectations of an increased horse population and the onset of the post-pandemic era, the Hong Kong Jockey Club is keen on providing opportunities to deserving local talents like Mo.

In related news, the Shaw family, prominent figures in Hong Kong horse racing, are currently setting their sights on the Epsom Derby with their horse Wimpiro. The family has been pursuing this dream for over two decades, coming close in 2019 when their horse Waikuku finished second. The Epsom Derby, first held in 1780 at the famous Epsom Downs racecourse, is considered a pinnacle in grass racing, attracting competitors of the highest caliber over the years.

Despite finishing second in the recent Leedsfield Derby Trial, Wimpiro’s performance has given the Shaw family renewed confidence in their racing prospects.
