Despite the demands of their careers, his family always made it a point to come together for the Onam sadhya (feast) and to create intricate pookkalam (floral rangoli). “These traditions were central to our celebrations,” he says. “Even today, we try to uphold these customs, though our busy lives often make it challenging.”

Mathew’s most cherished Onam memory revolves around watching movies on television. “One of my favorite aspects of the festival was watching movies on TV,” he recounts. “When a film aired for the first time, it felt like a special event. It was a rare opportunity to catch a film that you might have missed in theaters. Back then, missing a movie on TV felt like a major loss, as there were no streaming services or on-demand options.”

Mathew reflects on how times have changed. “Today’s children have access to movies at their fingertips, and the sense of anticipation we had is no longer the same. The joy of waiting for a movie to air on TV has given way to the convenience of streaming,” he notes. “It’s a different experience now, but the nostalgia of those Onam celebrations remains special.”
